“Most of our members just like to get out in the open and see their single-line kites fly free in the sky,” she says. Gipson serves as treasurer for the Four Seasons Kite Club. “We may become an endangered breed, as those fields are fewer and farther between,” she says. Ryan’s sister, Lynn Gipson of Walled Lake, described how finding flat fields that have cut grass, minimal trees and few soccer goals is getting tricky for fliers. You’re moving around, the kite is pulling and you’re getting fresh air.” If you have a stunt kite, the exercise is great. It can be very relaxing when you’re in the middle of a field flying a kite. “The idea is to relax, and keep your hands together for greater control of the kite. “Flying a sport kite is not very hard at all,” Ryan says. These kites can be stopped in midair and even flown backward. Quad line kites, by comparison, are more challenging to fly, with four flying lines attached. They are capable of flying in circles and straight lines as well as performing tricks.īeginners can get used to controlling them in just a few minutes. Stunt kites are maneuverable with two lines attached between 80 and 120 feet long, Ryan explains. The standard flying line is Dacron, but Kevlar line is stronger. Fliers need 20-pound line for smaller kites, and up to 500-pound or even 1,000-pound line for the bigger kites. A 500-foot spool of flying line is $10-$50, depending on the strength of the line. The expense does not stop with the kite, either. Some of the more exotic kites in the single-line variety can cost more than $100. They last much longer than the plastic ones, he says, but cost $10-$15 or more. Higher-quality kites are made with a polyester rip-stop material and fiberglass or carbon fiber rods. Ryan says they last only a brief time and cost as much as$4-$5. Low-grade kites today have plastic sticks and sails.

Ryan remembers bringing them home and soaking the wood sticks in the bathtub to soften them up, so they wouldn’t break when he put his kites together. Standard diamond kites, like the Hi-Flier brand, cost only about 15 cents at the corner store. Costing about 25 cents, his kite has sail material made of paper and tails made from strips of old sheets that Ryan’s mom gave him and his siblings. Ryan says he still has a box kite from his childhood – a style popular in the late ’50s and early ’60s – that he has never flown.

The material a kite is made of, its shape and its construction are the factors that determine its quality. This requires a very light kite, he adds. “Since there is no wind, it is up to the flier to make it, by walking backwards.” “Indoor kite flying is a little different from outdoors,” Ryan says.
